Relief
El Altet airport is located on an extensive Quaternary formation of the Elche basin, which has a glacis model, 43 metres above sea level. Topographical features are practically non-existent. The only thing that alters the immediate landscape are the Miocene elevations of the Sierra de Colmenares (barely over 100 metres high), which, in an east-west direction, is located just over 1 km to the north of the airport.6
Climate
Main article: Arid Mediterranean climate
The intensity and direction of the winds rarely exceed 20 knots, mainly from the west and north-west. The thermal and rainfall characteristics of the area (around 17 °C and an annual average of 300 mm) and the high levels of visibility (99.5% of measurements exceed 4,800 metres) give the airport an optimum location for efficient use, especially due to the excellent orientation of the runway.
